Frequently Asked Questions About Removals To Cyprus
How long do removals and shipping to Cyprus take?
Usually, we estimate around 1-4 weeks for a sole use or full container (FCL) to arrive at most imports, including Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos, and Larnaca. Shared containers (LCL) could take slightly longer.
Unfortunately, the timescales for shipping to Cyprus are not precise. We would love to be able to give our customers exact timings for international removals to Cyprus, but several factors come into play when shipping internationally, and some of them are beyond our control.
On arrival, your shipping container will need to be cleared by customs, and how long this takes can vary depending on how busy the port is. For this reason, all shipping times are only estimates. It is important to mention that there is a good chance that a part load container, sometimes referred to as a shared or LCL, will take longer to arrive than a full container load, FCL.
How much do removals to Cyprus from the UK cost?
The cost of removals to Cyprus will depend on several factors, such as the volume of goods you are sending, what packing is required, and the distance you are from the port.
There will also be additional costs to consider, such as optional insurance/shipment protection and Cyprus customs inspection fees that need to be paid on arrival.
The best way to get a more accurate price or estimate is to call our team at 01942 559960 or request a removals quote online. They can also advise on the best way to reduce your removal costs.
What is included in the cost for removals to Cyprus?
We offer a fully comprehensive removal service to Cyprus, which will take care of everything for you. The removal service includes door-to-door pick-up and delivery (not door-to-port), export packing by professional international removal packers, specialist cartons, crates, and antique packing as required, help with customs paperwork and inventory listing, shipping via accredited shipping lines, transport to and from the port, customs clearance service,
Additional fees that are not included in your removal costs quote include customs inspection fees, duties and port fees payable on arrival in Cyprus, storage services, and maritime insurance or shipment protection cover, which is recommended but not required.
What is the container shipping or removal process to Cyprus?
Your household belongings and furniture will be shipped to Cyprus via a sea freight service. The overseas removals service can be quite complicated, but with United Removals’, our expert teams will make the process as easy and stress-free as possible. You can sit back and let us do all the heavy lifting!
Our Cyprus removal service includes the following steps:
1) A home or video survey to provide you with an accurate quote or removal estimate.
2) A personal Move Coordinator to plan and manage all aspects of your home removal.
3) They will guide you through completing all the necessary paperwork for sea freight shipping, customs clearance, and shipment protection.
4) On move day, our movers and packers will take care of all the packing and export wrapping of furniture and other belongings.
5) If you require a full-load container (either 20 ft or 40 ft), the shipping container will be delivered to your property and loaded by the packing crew.
6) For shared or part-load containers, your household goods and personal belongings will be taken in our removal van to one of our depots for loading onto the shipping container as groupage.
7) The container will then be sent by sea freight to Cyprus.
8) On arrival at port (we ship to all major ports in Cyprus), our local partner agents will handle the customs process for you. Once your shipment has been cleared and all customs fees and duties paid, it will be released for final delivery.

What about small moves to Cyprus?
If you are only sending a few personal belongings such as luggage and boxes, we recommend our baggage or box shipping service.
We can deliver boxes and other packing materials for you to self-pack. Once you are ready, we can collect them and deliver them to your address in Cyprus.
Our baggage shipping service for small moves includes up to about 20 boxes or suitcases and can include items such as TVs, bicycles, surfboards and toolboxes.
It does not, however include large items of furniture.
Are there any prohibited and restricted items for Cyprus I need to be aware of when packing?
Items you should avoid importing into Cyprus
Just like any other destination, Cyprus has specific regulations regarding items that can be brought into the country. Whether you’re planning a vacation or considering relocating, it’s essential to be aware of these restrictions to avoid any complications upon arrival.
Here are just some examples of items that are restricted for import into Cyprus and may require prior approval or specific conditions:
- Pets: They need to be identifiable (either by tattoo or an electronic identification system), vaccinated against rabies, and accompanied by a health certificate. For more details, it’s advisable to consult the nearest embassy.
- Meat, milk, and dairy products: A maximum of 10 kg is allowed if they come from Croatia, Færøer Islands, Greenland, and Iceland.
- Powdered milk for babies, food for children, and special medical food: This includes pet food, which should not require refrigeration before opening. It should be brand packaged with the original seal (unless currently in use). The quantity limit is 10 kg if originating from Croatia, Færøer Islands, Greenland, and Iceland, and 2 kg if from other countries.
- Fish: Allowed only if it is disembowelled and the total weight does not exceed 20 kg.
The following items are strictly prohibited for import into Cyprus:
- Meat and milk: Including any products derived from them, from non-EU countries. Exceptions include limited quantities from Andorra, Croatia, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland, and specific products from a few other countries.
- Protected species and their products: As listed by the CITES (Washington Convention), such as ivory, tortoise shell, coral, reptile skin, and wood from Amazonian forests.
- Additional Notes:
- Currency: There are no restrictions if you’re coming from an EU country. However, if you’re traveling from outside the EU, you need to declare amounts exceeding 10,000 euros or its equivalent in another currency.
- Coats, fur, and leather shoes made from protected animals will require special authorization.
For a comprehensive understanding and any updates on the regulations, it’s always recommended to refer to the official guidelines provided by the Cyprus government or relevant authorities.
Do you provide an air freight service to Cyprus?
If you only have a small number of personal effects to send to Cyprus, then our air freight removal service is for you. We can provide you with boxes and cartons, or you can use your own bags and suitcases. This is the quickest removals service but also the most expensive. Many people, therefore, use a combination of both air freight and sea freight shipping services.

The United Removals complete guide to household removals to Cyprus from the UK
Essential tips to make removals to Cyprus easier and stress free
It can be daunting if you have not undertaken an international removal before. There are a lot of things to consider. Our guide below gives you a quick overview of what you need to know about overseas removals from the UK to Cyprus.
However, remember, your United Removals Coordinator will guide you step by step through the process and take care of the details for you.
Planning your move – Start early!
When it comes to any type of house move, planning, and preparation are the most important things you should consider, and this is particularly important when you are moving overseas.
The best advice we can give you regarding removals to Cyprus is to start planning everything early. Do not leave everything until the last minute; otherwise, you might have forgotten something important.
We recommend that you begin by booking your initial free home survey with us at least 3-6 months before you plan to move. Whilst we do our best to accommodate last-minute and urgent moves, your relocation will be a lot smoother and stress-free if you have time to prepare in advance.
Get quotes from about 3 specialist international removal companies
We recommend getting a few quotes for your move so you can compare the different styles of companies and ensure you are happy with their service. Make sure, however, that you are comparing like with like. For example, are the volumes the same? Is everything included?
Also, overseas removals are very different to domestic moves. It is therefore essential to ensure that your removalist is experienced, if not specialising in international moves.
We are confident that you’ll find your quote from United Removals to be very competitive and can be assured that standards of service are second to none.
Find the right balance of what to take and what to leave behind
In recent years, shipping costs have increased, so you may want to keep this in mind when you consider what you want to take with you to Cyprus and what you can leave behind. However, it isn’t all bad news; remember, it becomes relatively cheaper as you ship more.
You need to think about the cost involved in replacing some of your items in Cyprus if you are not sure about shipping them. Even when they are only small items, this cost can soon add up, particularly if there are many things.
Research the cost of replacement items as some things are more expensive, and some may not even be available – it may turn out that shipping them may be more economical in the long run.
Storage services for your household goods in the UK or Cyprus
Will you need storage in the UK or Cyprus?
Moving from one location in the UK to another is rarely the smooth process that people hope for, so it goes without saying that when you move to another country, the entire process can become a little trickier.
Often people find that they have a period once they have sold their property and before they move when they need to place their belongings in storage, and this is something we can help you with.
We have several storage solutions depending on your needs. We can arrange storage for your personal effects in the UK before they are shipped or in Cyprus after they arrive – whichever suits your situation.
Suppose the issue is that you do not have a fixed address in Cyprus to ship your belongings to. In that case, we can arrange for your household goods and personal effects to be placed in storage in Cyprus whilst you sort out accommodation.
Once you have a property ready, our local movers can arrange delivery of your belongings from storage.
Packing for your move to Cyprus
Your belongings must be appropriately packed for shipping to Cyprus. The journey is a lengthy one, and they will be moved around from one form of transport to another more than once.
This means that there is chance items could move within your shipping container, and if they are not adequately protected, then they could become damaged.
A high standard of export packing is, therefore, essential so it is recommended that you use a professional packing service. This will also save you a lot of time and stress.
Our team of professional packers are expertly trained to deal with all the issues that can be encountered with export wrapping. The boxes that we use to transport all of your smaller items are double-walled, and we also ensure that all of your furniture is export wrapped to ensure that it arrives in good condition at your destination.
For those delicate and fragile items, such as artwork and antiques, we can arrange specialist packing to offer better protection to your personal effects. This includes custom built crates.
Our expert packing team is here to help you with as little or as much of your packing process as you want. We offer all of our customers the following packing services:
- Full international export standard packing & wrap service
- Fully trained export packers
- Provision of export quality boxes, cartons, packing paper & packing materials
- Custom wood casing/crates, if required
- Professional antique wrapping for delicate items
- Advice on preparing your items for transport to Cyprus
- Premium grade disinfectant available for outdoor items
- Full inventory list for customs
You may wish to start packing some boxes before your move day. Speak to our team about using export quality cartons, and remember you’ll need to keep an inventory of items for customs.
Preparing your items for removal and shipping
The Cyprus government is quite stringent when it comes to biosecurity issues in order to protect their unique environment, and as such, all of your items will need to be cleaned thoroughly in preparation for shipping. This is especially the case when it comes to any outdoor items.
If you are planning to ship tools, bikes, garden equipment and BBQ then these will need to be cleaned and disinfected thoroughly. Our team can offer a professional disinfecting service that should clean all of your belongings thoroughly enough to keep the Customs inspectors happy.
Shipping Furniture to Cyprus
Our international removal service is perfect for shipping your furniture to Cyprus from the UK.
For furniture removals, every item is carefully packed or ‘export wrapped’ using packing materials such as blanket wrap. All furniture pieces including sofas, armchairs, beds, tables, and cupboards can be packed and shipped in a container.
As large items are bulky you consider which are cost effective to send. For example, most houses and apartments in Spain have built-in wardrobes so it might not be worthwhile shipping these.
Arranging collection and shipping from Self-storage in the UK
You may wish to put your belongings in self-storage units whilst you are selling your property or waiting for your visa to come through.
Shipping your belongings to Cyprus from storage is a simple process. If your household belongings and furniture are in self-storage units in the UK, our team can arrange to collect them and professionally pack them for shipping either at the self-storage unit or back at our depot.
If you wish to pre-pack yourself, please ensure you have appropriate international shipping cartons/boxes and that everything is carefully wrapped and packed for its journey.
Customs clearance and inspection
Many of our customers worry about customs clearance for all of their belongings when they arrive in Cyprus especially since Brexit. This is something that we can help you with. You may find the following information useful when planning your move.
If you are an EU citizen you should have no problem with customs. For non-EU citizens moving to Cyprus, you can import used personal effects and household goods duty-free but you should check that you meet the requirements and have all the correct documentation.
Customs regulations and duties are subject to change, so it can be a good idea to check for the most up-to-date guidelines and information.
If you do not meet the criteria for household effects, or it is deemed that your goods are commercial imports, then Customs duty and GST may be applied.
On arrival in Cyprus, your household goods and personal effects will require inspection and clearance from Cyprus Customs before they are allowed into the country.
In order for your shipping container to be released, you will need to pay any Cyprus Customs inspections and customs fees, and also any quarantine fees. These will be payable locally. Our agents in Cyprus will be able to assist you with the customs clearance process.
The personal Move Coordinator who is assigned to you when you choose us to assist with your removal will be able to advise you with information regarding what you can and can’t take to Cyprus and how you can prepare and clean your items for shipping. If you prefer, our expert packers can help you with this.
Insurance and shipping protection
United International Removals take great care to ensure your belongings are well-packed and taken care of during their journey. We only use accredited shipping lines and partners to ensure the highest service levels.
However, due to the nature of international shipping and removals, it is recommended that you take out your own maritime insurance policy or shipment protection cover for complete peace of mind. Just like when you mail a parcel overseas, the shipping company cannot cover the full value of your goods in the unlikely event of something going missing or being broken.
We can offer and recommend a highly flexible Shipment Protection Cover that will provide you with many advantages.
This cover is simple and easy to put in place. All that is required is completing a shipment protection valuation form detailing the items that need to be covered and their value.
The shipment protection costs are calculated on the value of the belongings you want to cover and whether you have packed them yourself or if they have been packed professionally.
Shipping cars and other motor vehicles with your removal
As cars are expensive and people drive on the left side in Cyprus, it is certainly worth considering shipping your vehicle in a 40 ft container alongside your house contents.
Cyprus does have strict import criteria for cars so speak to our team to ensure that importing your vehicle is feasible and cost effective.
Some paperwork will be required but we can help you ensure it is all completed correctly, and our agents will take care of customs clearance for you.
A Practical Guide To Moving To Cyprus
Essential advice to help make your move to Cyprus a breeze!Relocating is always a challenge, and when it involves moving to a beautiful island nation like Cyprus, there are unique aspects to consider. From finding the perfect home, and securing a job, to understanding the best regions to settle in, the journey can be overwhelming.
While we can’t make decisions for you, we’ve crafted this guide to offer you some valuable insights.
Buying property in Cyprus
Cyprus, known for its picturesque landscapes and Mediterranean allure, has become a hotspot for UK expats seeking a sunnier climate. While some areas, particularly coastal regions like Limassol and Paphos, can be pricier, venturing into the countryside or lesser-known towns can reveal hidden gems at attractive prices.
Recent data suggests that the Cypriot property market is on the rise, with an increasing number of UK expats investing in holiday homes or permanent residences. For instance, a villa in Larnaca might set you back around €300,000, while a countryside home in Nicosia could be as affordable as €150,000.
Navigating the property market in a foreign country can be challenging. Engaging with a local real estate agent can provide invaluable insights and guidance. Many expats opt to rent initially, allowing them to explore different regions before committing to a purchase.
Where to move to in Spain?
Cyprus, with its rich history, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture, offers a variety of places to call home. Whether you’re looking for a bustling city life or a tranquil coastal retreat, Cyprus has it all. And if you’re moving from another country, there are several international moving services that can assist you in your transition.
- Nicosia
The capital city of Cyprus, Nicosia is a blend of ancient history and modern living. With its Venetian walls, old town charm, and bustling business districts, it offers a unique living experience. As the island’s main economic hub, Nicosia presents numerous job opportunities, especially in finance, IT, and services
- Limassol
Known for its lively port and dynamic cultural scene, Limassol is a city that never sleeps. It’s a hotspot for expats, offering a mix of beach life, nightlife, and a thriving business district. The city is also famous for its wine festivals, ancient ruins, and beautiful promenade.
- Paphos
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Paphos is steeped in mythology and history. It’s an ideal destination for those who appreciate archaeology, with sites like the Tombs of the Kings and the Paphos Mosaics. The city also boasts stunning beaches and a picturesque harbour.
- Larnaca
Home to the main international airport, Larnaca is the gateway to Cyprus for many. The city offers a relaxed coastal lifestyle, with its beautiful Finikoudes beach, salt lake, and the famous Hala Sultan Tekke mosque. It’s a perfect blend of beach life and cultural exploration.
- Ayia Napa and Protaras
If you’re looking for a vibrant nightlife and stunning beaches, Ayia Napa and Protaras are the places to be. Famous for their crystal-clear waters and golden sands, these towns are popular tourist destinations, offering numerous entertainment options.
- Troodos Mountains
For those who prefer cooler climates and scenic beauty, the Troodos Mountains are a haven. Rich in monasteries, waterfalls, and hiking trails, it’s a paradise for nature lovers. The region also offers traditional Cypriot villages, providing a glimpse into the island’s rich culture and traditions.
- Famagusta
Once a thriving coastal city, Famagusta is now a testament to the island’s turbulent history. The walled city, with its Gothic architecture and deserted beaches, offers a unique, albeit poignant, living experience.
- Kyrenia (Girne)
Located in Northern Cyprus, Kyrenia is known for its traditional harbour, historic castle, and mountain backdrop. The town offers a mix of Turkish and Cypriot cultures, making it a unique place to live and explore.
Remember, wherever you choose to move in Cyprus, the island’s warm hospitality, delicious cuisine, and rich history will make you feel right at home.
Relocating your pets
Bringing your beloved pet to Cyprus requires careful planning. The island has specific regulations to ensure the health and safety of its animal population. All pets must have an ISO-standard microchip, and your UK vet can assist with this process.
While Cyprus doesn’t impose a quarantine for pets from the UK, they must have up-to-date vaccinations, especially against rabies. It’s crucial to have all paperwork in order, including health certificates and vaccination records.
Given the intricacies of pet relocation, many UK expats choose to employ specialist pet relocation services. These experts can streamline the process, ensuring your furry friend arrives safely in their new Mediterranean home.
Looking for a job in Cyprus
The Cypriot job market offers a myriad of opportunities for UK expats. From the bustling tourism sector in Ayia Napa to the financial hubs in Nicosia, there’s a demand for skilled professionals, especially those fluent in English.
If you’re relocating without a job lined up, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the local employment landscape. Sectors like real estate, hospitality, and finance often seek English-speaking professionals. Websites, local newspapers, and recruitment agencies can be excellent resources.
For those with specialized skills, such as IT or healthcare, Cyprus presents a wealth of opportunities. As always, networking can open doors, so consider joining expat groups or professional associations in Cyprus.
Visas for moving to Cyprus
Post-Brexit, the visa landscape for UK citizens wishing to move to Cyprus has evolved. While short stays remain relatively straightforward, longer residencies require specific visas or permits.
There are several visa categories to explore, from work and student visas to residency permits for retirees or property investors. The “Golden Visa” program, for instance, offers residency to those investing in Cypriot property.
Given the ever-changing nature of immigration rules, it’s advisable to consult with an immigration expert or the Cypriot consulate in the UK. They can provide up-to-date information and guide you through the application process.
Transferring money to Cyprus
Financial logistics are a crucial aspect of relocating. When transferring significant sums from the UK to Cyprus, it’s essential to ensure you’re getting competitive exchange rates and minimal fees.
Several international money transfer services can offer better rates than traditional banks. Before committing, compare these services, check for hidden charges, and ensure they have robust security measures in place.
If you’re making a substantial transfer, such as purchasing property, even a small fluctuation in the GBP to Euro exchange rate can have a significant impact. Some expats use forward contracts to lock in favourable rates and protect against future currency shifts.
