As Rob Potter, Reserves Area Manager at the Scottish Wildlife Trust, explains: “Handa is an isolated location and the people you work with will also be the people you socialise with in the evening, so it needs to be someone that’s comfortable with communal living.”

According to the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the ideal candidate needs far more than wildlife expertise. A strong knowledge of seabird monitoring, marine and terrestrial natural history is key, but so are resilience, emotional maturity and excellent people skills. Living and working in such close quarters means your colleagues are also your social circle. You’ll be managing volunteers, welcoming up to 8,000 visitors each season, handling maintenance tasks and adapting plans daily around weather conditions. It’s challenging, but hugely rewarding.

Potter goes on to say: “It’s a challenging role, but the successful candidate will spend some warm, sunny days in one of the most beautiful and exciting places in Scotland.”
